Using ZBrush MatCaps in Blender

In this tutorial we'll take a look at how to use ZBrush MatCaps in Blender, and where to find MatCaps.

This works with Blender 2.5 and 2.49.

Thanks Kernon, I'm sorta new to blender and had no idea this was even possible I have learned so much watching your videos and just wanted to thank you for taking the time to make them.

btw I went to watch your zbrush matcap video a second time and it is no longer showing, i am getting a technical difficulties window although it may just be on my end.

Hey, thanks! I'm re-uploading the video to vimeo. It should be available again in about 10 minutes.

This is such an amazing tip! Ever since you did your modeling exercise for the door knob handle I was hoping you'd make this a quick tip.

This is a great quick and painless technique to making great renders. Of course everyone probably realizes that another great resource is using Light probes or HDR maps in the same way.

Is there a way to also get a reflection using this technique? If there is a neighboring object? or does this override the material completely?

oh I almost forgot....thanks again for taking the time to make these tutorials.

You can combine this texture with any other texture channel to get the desired overall effect, so there's plenty of room for experimenting. It doesn't override the mirror settings in the material properties.

I think these are best for enhancing the visualization within the 3d view. They're great because the texture file size is so small. However, I wouldn't think of them as a replacement for HDR maps, especially if the scene is animated. They might work for a still shot, though.

Thanks!

Once i got the kwout extension and tried this out, man i got excited with the game engine real time renders, it looks unbelievable !I now have an awesome looking metal aircraft flying around with the reflections on it , it looks so cool, thanks! As far as i know , the hdr images dont work in the game engine,(well i couldn't work it out) so this is totally a solution to that problem. Very nice.

Kernon, what's the name of the plugin you have on the left side of your firefox, with all the bookmarks and stuff?

I think you're referring to the "All-in-One Sidebar". I have it in the toolbar mode.
